A Weekend Without Social Media

Without access to the digital world, I didn’t feel fully present in the physical one.

Recently, there have been plenty of conversations in the tech world about the future of the internet. Ever since Facebook changed its parent company name to Meta, people have been discussing what will the metaverse look like. It’s hard to imagine a world where people are not always in the real one. A world where our realities are not shaped by physical objects but digital ones.

I started to wonder what my role in this evolution of the internet will look like and if I wanted to be a part of it. I seriously questioned the benefits of digitizing our world and how much more power it’ll give to a select few technology companies. I questioned all of these things though as if I wasn’t already living in it. I wondered what my future would look like in a world where the physical is just an accessory to the digital. Not realizing that I already live in it and that increasingly digital spaces help morph the physical world.

The sad reality was that my life wasn’t complete without seeing it through the digital world, where it allowed me to see the real world more clearly.
