College Graduates From Elite Schools Deserve Student Loan Forgiveness
A very small share of student loan borrowers attends elite colleges.
On Tuesday night, CNN hosted a town hall with Joe Biden where he was pressed on the issue of student loan forgiveness. Jocelyn Fish, a marketing director for a community theater, asked,
We need at least a $50,000 minimum. What will you do to make it happen?
The President responded with a short reply, “I will not make it happen.”
Biden went on to further explain that students who went to elite colleges like Penn, Harvard, and Yale were undeserving of student loan forgiveness. The exchange was jarring for progressives and advocates of student loan forgiveness who found it alarming that the President would so quickly dismiss the idea. Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez, a House Representative from New York and a fierce supporter of the $50,000 proposal, went on Twitter voicing her frustrations with the President’s comments. She tweeted,
