‘Coming Out Colton’ Commidifies Gayness

The docuseries attempts to tell the story of Colton Underwood coming out, but is the most interesting when you hear the stories of other gay men and often feels like a quick money grab for the former ‘Bachelor’ star.

I wanted to like Coming Out Colton on Netflix because I found stories like it so comforting when I was younger. Prior to coming out myself, I would spend hours on YouTube watching videos of men coming out and convince myself that it was normal. If they could do it, then so could I. The climate towards gay people has changed so much since when I was a kid and younger generations today are much more accepting, but coming out stories still matter for countless queer people that are afraid. So, I wanted to like Coming Out Colton for the sake of it telling a story that still holds so much importance in today’s culture. However, the show was often at its best when you were hearing from anyone but Underwood’s story and follows a similar plot of shining the brightest spotlight on white people to tell the LGBTQIA+ story.
