Equitable Distribution of the Covid Vaccine Is More Important Than Equal Distribution

As more Americans get vaccinated, a similar trend is beginning to emerge — wealthy Americans are being prioritized over poorer ones.

Like many other things in this country, wealthy White Americans are taking advantage of the system in place. As more Americans get vaccinated against the coronavirus, city officials across the country are seeing more of the vaccines going to wealthier Americans. As reported by the New York Times,

Similar scenarios are unfolding around the country as states expand eligibility for the shots. Although low-income communities of color have been hit hardest by Covid-19, health officials in many cities say that people from wealthier, largely white neighborhoods have been flooding vaccination appointment systems and taking an outsized share of the limited supply.

The situation emerging isn’t entirely shocking when you consider the obstacles that poorer Americans face in getting vaccinated. With limited access to the internet, public transportation, and the inability to take off from work, poorer Americans are put in a situation that overwhelmingly favors wealthier Americans to take advantage of the system in place.
