False Equivalence: Black and White Privileges
If White Privilege exists, then Black Privilege must exist too! Right?
“White privilege” is a term we’ve heard used by both liberals and conservatives to discuss societal privileges given to White people over non-White people in countries like America. It details an often invisible set of benefits that come from whiteness including professional, educational, and personal ones. Yet, there are many people in America who falsely assume if White people have certain privileges, then Black people do too. After all, Black people can use the N-word whenever they like without repercussions but White people are not afforded the same pass. However, taking a hard look at the many privileges White people have over the very few that Black do will show that really only one group can claim to have privilege in this country.
What is one of the most powerful privileges bestowed to White people? Is this same privilege seen by non-Whites?
Education
White people get the benefit of learning about their race in school and understanding that their history is the standard in America. Take for example the teaching of any major event in this country’s history. When is the last time it was shown from a non-White person’s perspective unrelated to overcoming racism? Outside…
