I don’t think that it should be up to users to truly understand the privacy policies of these companies. They make it confusing so that we do not educate ourselves. The responsibility should fall on the Federal government to ensure that technology companies are following privacy standards established by the government. That way the onus is not on consumers to hold these companies accountable and a system is in place in the event that companies violate privacy standards. The European Union follows this model and it is one reason why companies now ask us to allow cookies when when we go on websites. For too long, the US government has played into the hands of US technology companies. It is time they establish privacy standards that truly hold these companies accountable for the gross misuse of our information.
