I Love Bernie Sanders, But I’m Voting for Biden
As a Black man, I can’t afford to go with the candidate that has bold and ambitious plans. I need a candidate that white voters will back too.
The Democratic nomination has changed dramatically over the past week. On Saturday, Biden had a resounding lead over Sanders in South Carolina and confirmed to many that the African American community believes in him. The result also brought back energy to a campaign that many had considered to be all but over. Just the next day, both Buttigieg and Klobuchar ended their campaigns and endorsed Biden as the best candidate to win.
Black voters provided a lifeline to Biden in exchange for someone they believed white voters would vote for too.
There are many aspects of the Sanders campaign that I wholeheartedly agree with and champion. Student loan debt wiped away, universal healthcare, and a focus on climate change are causes that I can get behind. As a millennial with an embarrassing amount of student loan debt, it would be nice seeing that disappear to focus on major investments like a home. Universal healthcare would make life so much easier if I knew my diabetes was covered regardless of where I went.
