When Black People Die, Police Get to Resign
The Minnesota officer that fatally shot Daunte Wright announced their resignation while Wright will be forever gone.
Just recently, my car registration expired and I didn’t realize it until I started driving to my mom’s house. My mom lives 40 miles away from me, but I immediately started to get very anxious. I did not want to get pulled over. I have come to not trust the police. I can’t differentiate between which ones are good and bad, and all it takes is one interaction with a bad cop to be another national headline. While I was able to renew my registration shortly after I got to my mom’s, the same cannot be said for Daunte Wright. An expired registration led to his death.
On Sunday, April 11, 2021, a Black man lost his life. On Tuesday, April 13, 2021, a police officer resigned for their actions. It is another day of a Black man being killed at the hands of police. According to reports, Daunte Wright was pulled over for a traffic violation related to expired registration tags. Yet, Wright being pulled over resulted in his life coming to an end. Far too often, a Black person being pulled over leads to death.
